Food Allergy Awareness Week Educational Proposal:
“Adopt” an Allergen Program:
Focus on: Elementary School Age Children who can READ.
During the Food Allergy Awareness Week this  May, each student can
"adopt" one allergen from the big 8:
• Milk
• Eggs
• Peanuts
• Tree nuts (such as almonds, cashews, walnuts)
• Fish (such as bass, cod, flounder)
• Shellfish (such as crab, lobster, shrimp)
• Soy
• Wheat
1.      The student has to avoid the allergen for that week.
2.      The student will need to read food labels to ensure that he/she is
avoiding the allergen.
3.      At the end of the exercise, teachers, students and parents will
discuss their week and lifestyle changes etc.
The purpose of this exercise is to:
•       Raise Awareness about food allergies and their complications.
•       Heighten sense of empathy towards fellow students who may suffer
from food allergies.
•       Reading exercise: reading and understanding food labels and cross
contaminants.
